As a Tamil from a Hindu family in the Northern Sri Lankan town of Jaffna I was exposed to Vedic astrology only as a third party or as a bystander when I was a boy. I was curious about my people's obsessive and near morbid interest in Astrology. What ever happened in their lives they explained it by way of some mysterious planetary positions (almost always post factum) and if necessary even consoled themselves of the inevitable. They were also concerned about planetary transits and for how many years their effects would last etc., this was all a mystery to me. And I must admit it fascinated me. At school none of us wasted time talking about astrology although we were all respectfully aware of our parentsтАЩ deep rooted belief in Astrology.
